Call for Postdoctoral Fellows: Hosting Applicants for National Fellowships
The Department of Mathematics at RKMVERI invites strong early-career mathematicians who hold, or are applying for, a national postdoctoral fellowship to join us as postdoctoral fellows. The Department does not fund postdoctoral positions itself. Candidates obtain their own fellowship; the Department provides the host institution, a faculty mentor, and the research environment.
How it works
- If you already hold a fellowship that can be taken up at any recognised Indian institution (for example, the NBHM Postdoctoral Fellowship, which is awarded without a named host), write to us with your application. If a faculty member agrees to mentor you and the Department approves, we will issue a formal letter of acceptance. On joining, the Institute will provide the certificates the funding agency requires.
- If your fellowship requires a named host and mentor at the time of application (for example, ANRF N-PDF), contact a prospective mentor well before the call opens. If the mentor and the Department agree, you will receive the mentor’s consent and the Institute’s endorsement letter, and you then apply for the fellowship yourself. Your appointment depends on the fellowship being awarded.
Fellowships we host
- NBHM Postdoctoral Fellowship (DAE). Applications go directly to NBHM, with deadlines of 30 June and 31 December each year. We welcome enquiries before you apply, so that RKMVERI is on your list when your award comes through.
- ANRF National Post-Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF). The next call is expected in January–February 2027. You need a confirmed mentor and the Institute’s endorsement before the call opens, so please contact us by 31 December 2026.
- Other national fellowships that can be held at a recognised Indian institution. Please write to us with details.
Research areas and potential mentors
- Dr. Stephan Baier: Analytic number theory, including prime distribution, sieve methods, exponential sums, analytic properties of L-functions, quantitative properties of elliptic curves, and Diophantine approximation
- Dr. Arka Banerjee: Metric geometry, geometric group theory, and geometric topology
- Dr. Sagnik Chakraborty: Commutative algebra, especially polynomial rings and power series rings
- Dr. Debaldev Jana: Nonlinear dynamics and its applications to biological systems
- Dr. Shameek Paul: Affine algebraic geometry and weighted zero-sum constants
- Dr. Amit Samanta: Harmonic analysis on Euclidean spaces, Heisenberg groups, and more generally Lie groups
The Department works closely with RKMVERI’s Physics and Computer Science departments, and we welcome candidates whose work connects mathematics with physics, computer science, or data science.

Eligibility
Candidates should hold a PhD in Mathematics or a closely related field, or have submitted their thesis, and must meet the eligibility conditions of their fellowship. For example:
- NBHM: Indian nationals below the age of 35.
- N-PDF: Indian citizens aged 35 or under, with a five-year age relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwD and women candidates. N-PDF fellows may not work with their PhD guide or co-guide, and normally may not hold the fellowship at the institution where they earned their PhD.

Email with the subject line “Postdoc – [Fellowship name] – [Your name]”. Please include:
- A CV with publication list
- A research statement of 2–3 pages, naming the faculty member(s) you would like to work with
- The names of two or three referees
- Your PhD thesis synopsis, or your thesis if available
