Dept. of Mathematics, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI) has organised an colloquium on “Is the square root of 2 very different from the cube root of 2?” by Professor Anish Ghosh, TIFR, Mumbai on 11 November 2021.

Title: Is the square root of 2 very different from the cube root of 2?

Abstract

It is a remarkable fact that one can understand properties of numbers using “chaotic” dynamical systems. I will illustrate this principle with several examples and in doing so, try and answer the question in the title.
