The Department of Mathematics and Department of Computer Science have jointly  organized a seminar on  ‘Mathematics Curriculum for an Aspiring Data Scientist – Self Learning Mode’ by Dr. S. Kumaresan, a celebrated mathemeticial and pedagogue in India. The seminar took place on 11 March 2026 at the Saradananda Seminar Hall, Prajna Bhavan, RKMVERI Belur Campus.

Abstract:

The rapidly evolving data-driven environment requires aspiring professionals to build a strong mathematical foundation that supports analytical thinking and informed decision-making. This talk discusses the essential mathematical concepts and tools that students should develop alongside their regular coursework, emphasizing that these competencies can be acquired in an engaging and exploratory manner through experimentation and problem solving.

The presentation also reflects on the role of teachers and educational institutions in aligning curriculum and pedagogy with contemporary needs by integrating applications, computational exposure, and learner-centered approaches that sustain the relevance of mathematics in emerging career pathways.

About the speaker:

Dr. S. Kumaresan is a distinguished mathematician and pedagogue, and former Dean of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Hyderabad. An alumnus of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and a former visiting member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, he is most celebrated as the founder and  former director of the Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) Programme. Since 1993, he has revolutionized Indian mathematics education by promoting a discovery-based pedagogy over rote learning. A recipient of the prestigious INSA Teachers Award, Dr. Kumaresan is also a prolific author of foundational textbooks, including Linear Algebra: A Geometric Approach and Topology of Metric Spaces, which remain essential resources for students across India.
